‘Fish market’ of a town: ‘It’s all about the fish’


Lawrence Fish Market in St. Joseph, Missouri, is one of the few places on the American West to sell fresh, local, free-range fish.

Fish market workers and a handful of other local residents, including a former pastor, are trying to keep the town afloat.

They hope to reopen the market this summer.

But it’s a complicated task that will take more than a few weeks, with the state of Missouri challenging the market’s constitutionality and trying to stop it from opening.

St. Joe, a town of about 1,500 people on Missouri’s Eastern seaboard, has struggled with a lack of grocery stores, and the town’s economic development has been largely in the hands of the local fishing industry, with no help from the federal government.

It’s one of a handful across the country that has become the poster child for what is sometimes called “the fish market,” a niche industry that has been transformed by a lack for grocery stores and other grocery-delivery services.

St., like other communities, has tried to open its own grocery stores over the years, but they have been met with resistance from some local businesses, especially those that sell meat and fish.

The fish market was a unique business opportunity, but it’s not the only one, said Mary Ebert, who is the town manager and owns the fish market.

The town has a small, privately owned business that supplies the town with fish, according to Ebert.

A few years ago, she had her fish market on the second floor of her house.

The market is run by local fishermen who rent the building, Ebert said.

The city has also tried to lease the building.

The Fish Market was opened in 2009 by a pastor from the nearby Church of the Brethren in St Joseph, which is owned by the church’s president, and which has been instrumental in maintaining the local economy, Eberts pastor, John C. Hargett, said in a recent interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Harken Stokes, a longtime local resident, also has owned the market for the past eight years.

“I’ve seen a lot of fish go in,” he said.

“The fish are fresh, they’re fresh and they’re not sick.

They’re really fresh.”

The fish are bought at the fish markets that dot the Stokes County area, he said, and then sold on the fish-buying website FishBazaar.com.

He said that the Fish Market’s workers do not need to be licensed.

“We are completely self-sufficient, and they don’t need any government,” he told Newsweek.

“They have their own way of doing things.”

Hargesons store, a three-story brick building, was renovated in 2010, but he said the fish is still the only way for the town to get fish to market.

He also owns the adjacent farm, which supplies meat to local restaurants and other businesses.

“If the market goes away, we can’t feed the people that come down here,” he added.

“That’s why I think the fish need to stay here.”

The Fish Markets’ success in St., Joseph was the result of a mix of factors, said Andrew Pankov, the town administrator.

Some of those factors include the availability of local, seasonal products, and a lack at the grocery stores.

The majority of the fish that are sold in the market are free-riding, which means they’re raised at home, with little to no processing.

Pankovich said the market has been operating since at least 2009.

He added that he hopes to have the market open again this summer, with a goal of getting the fish to markets in nearby cities and other states.

“There’s no way we can keep this fish market in St.”

Joseph, Pankovic said.

He has a couple of other fish markets in the St, Joseph area.

In 2014, St. James Fish Market opened in a small town near the St., Joe border, but its market has not been able to keep up with the demand of other St. Joes.

In recent years, St, Joes has seen a number of food deserts, as the city has lost population to other states, including Missouri.

Panks is hoping that St. Martin Fish Market, the market that is now in the heart of St. Marys, will provide a more permanent solution.

The new fish market will have about 70 fish in it, said Pankos, and it will be open seven days a week, with lunchtime service.

St Joseph Fish Market also has a market that sells chicken, eggs and other meat products.

Pinks and salmon, which are sold fresh in the markets, have become a mainstay in the local community.
